2020 1 Oz Proof Silver Australia Shipwrecks Series VERGULDE DRAECK Triangular Coin.
DESCRIPTION
The Dutch East India Company built the Vergulde Draeck in 1653. Three years later, the ship was heading from the Cape of Good Hope to Bavaria (today Jakarta) when it wrecked on a submerged reef off the coast of Western Australia. The crew of 193 men were carrying eight boxes of silver coins and trade goods worth over 180,000 guilders. Just 75 survived the initial wreck and made it to shore. Nine days later, seven men set sail for Bavaria to get help. The men they left behind were never seen again. Now, Australia remembers the wreck with this triangular coin. It was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver and is part of a mintage of just 20,000 pieces. It will arrive in GEM Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
The coin's obverse shows some of the survivors undergoing their ordeal at sea. One of the survivors is being pulled into the schuyt, the ship's boat, by other crewmen. At the bottom are some of the items lost. The Vergulde Draeck sinks on its side in the background. Above is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing her Royal Diamond Diadem. The portrait is joined by inscriptions of the monarch's name, "ELIZABETH II," the name of the issuing country, "AUSTRALIA," and the date, "2020."
