King Henry II of France spent his entire life fighting against the threat of the Hapsburg Dynasty and the Holy Roman Empire.
His chief rival was Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. After finally vanquishing Charles and agreeing to peace terms favorable to France in 1559, Henry staged a jousting tournament in celebration.
It was a grand affair full of colorful pageantry.
To open the ceremonies, Henry came dressed in his finest armor, a suit designed by French goldsmith and engraver Étienne Delaune that glorified war and Henry’s military prowess.
His ceremonial shield was an ornate and intricately designed piece of art that was richly engraved with an image depicting Hannibal’s victory over the Romans in an obvious allusion to the struggle of France against the Holy Roman Empire during the 16th Century.
Henry’s “Parade Armor” now resides in New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, a beautiful example of Renaissance art that illustrates royal life from more than 450 years ago.
It’s too bad it wasn’t effective in actual combat because Henry’s victorious day of celebration ended in tragedy when he was injured while jousting and died 10 days later.
He was only 40, his conquest of the Hapsburgs incomplete.
It would be another 200 years before Napoleon finally succeeded in dismantling the Holy Roman Empire and it wasn’t until 1918 when World War I put the final nails in the Hapsburg Dynasty’s coffin.
Now you can hold Henry’s famous shield in your hands with this silver medal from South Korea that was specifically manufactured so that multiple pieces can be stacked and stored with ease.
The fourth release in the “Shield Stacker” series, it’s an intricate reproduction that’s one-tenth of the size of the original shield.
Though not legal tender, each piece was struck in two full ounces of highly pure 99.9% silver. As such, these Shield of Henry II Stacker Medals make adding silver to your collection as easy as can be.
The OBVERSE of each medal features an incused image of Henry’s shield that’s even more spectacular than the original.
While the artifact displayed at The Met is rich with history and craftsmanship, this piece features detail so amazing that you can really see everything that was intended to be on full display when worn in public.
Look closely and you can see the intertwined letters: “H” for Henry II, “C” for Catherine de Médici, his queen; and “D” for Diane de Poitiers, his mistress, in the strapwork borders.
Interspersed with the initials are crescents, Henry’s personal badge and a reference to the moon goddess Diana and her namesake Diane de Poitiers.
The REVERSE shows the same image in high relief so that they fit together almost seamlessly.
This South Korea 1 Kilo Silver Shield of Henry II High Relief Stacker Medal comes with a Light Antique finish, a gentle patina that brings out the details of the famous ceremonial shield of French King Henry II.
